Who am I?

Hello! My name is Derek Mekelburg and I'm originally from Canada. 🇨🇦 I first started teaching English in Japan in 1997. I have since helped many Japanese people become more confident and fluent English speakers at various English conversation schools. Here are some photos from my years in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Tokyo, and the Kansai area of Japan.

Over the years, I have been proud to help students achieve their goals. Take Honoka, for example, who I helped prepare to study abroad in Toronto, Canada. Honoka wanted to study in Canada and use her English skills to find a trading job in Japan. She succeeded! I was happy to help her achieve her goal. Honoka now works at Temple University Japan supporting international students and faculty entirely in English! Amazing!

I will teach you to speak natural English with foreigners in any situation, whether at home or abroad, for work, travel, or leisure. My system will help you become a confident English speaker and help you achieve your goals.

STEP 1: Take a Free Trial Lesson

Meet me on Zoom for a free private lesson. I will check your level, goals, and speaking habits. There's no pressure. Feel free to try it out and see if it's right for you.

STEP 2: Choose a plan (group or private), pay with a credit card, and get started.

Choose a format that fits your schedule and learning style.

STEP 3: Attend Weekly Live Lessons

You'll practice conversation once a week (50 minutes x 4 times a month) in a group or private setting. There are no large classes, so you'll feel comfortable speaking and practicing.
